The Importance of Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities play an important role in the development and well-being of children and teenagers. They enable children to explore their interests and develop talents and skills that contribute to their holistic development. TCM encourages children to participate in extracurricular activities for a variety of reasons:
- Develops social skills: Through their participation in extracurricular activities, children develop essential social skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, and cooperation. Through interactions with peers, coaches, or instructors, children can learn how to navigate social dynamics, build relationships, and collaborate effectively.
- Increases self-confidence: Success and achievement in extracurricular activities can boost children’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Whether it’s making a basket or winning a competition, these experiences instill a sense of accomplishment in children, enhancing their self-respect and motivation.
- Encourages a healthy lifestyle: Many of the activities TCM offers promote physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular physical activity helps reduce stress, improve mood, and contributes to overall health.
- Improves academic performance: Research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities correlates positively with academic achievement. Being involved in structured, supervised activities outside of a classroom can improve students’ focus, motivation, and engagement. It also teaches important skills such as discipline, perseverance, and goal setting.
- Fosters a sense of community: Being a part of a team and working with others who share the same interests fosters connections and helps children feel a sense of belonging. It can also help them develop a sense of social responsibility and empathy while instilling important values such as giving back and making a positive difference.
TCM believes in the benefits these activities provide for children whose circumstances have affected their self-esteem or who may not have had the chance to develop some of these capabilities. Our campus offers a variety of extracurricular opportunities for children to engage in that promote physical fitness and teamwork and foster creativity and expression.
Promoting Physical Fitness and Teamwork
TCM has a number of options, both organized and recreational, that promote physical fitness and teamwork for children. We have basketball and volleyball to give children the opportunity to be a part of organized teams. Additionally, the TCM campus has bicycles, RipStiks, tracks, a swimming pool, playgrounds, and a community garden where every member of the TCM community can come together and participate in various physical fitness activities.
Fostering Creativity and Expression
At TCM, there are also numerous opportunities for children to engage in extracurricular activities that are not sports-related. We have an on-campus Girl Scout troop, a traveling choir, a scholastic team, book club, chess club, sign language club, and youth groups for children 12 and older. Children are involved in week-long camps during the summer, such as art camp, fishing camp, Bible camp, church camp, and more. TCM also participates in the ASCEND Student Convention, which is an annual competitive convention for Christian and homeschool children. ASCEND offers a vast array of events for children to choose from and train for, with the purpose of developing leadership skills and character through diligent preparation. From photography to academics to family sciences and so much more, children can discover and pursue the activities they are most passionate about.
