Educational Opportunities for Residents
TCM has its own on-campus, private Christian school called Tupelo Christian Academy (TCA) that serves children from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Students are taught by dedicated teachers and learn through a variety of methods and programs, depending on their age and specific needs. Children attend school Monday through Friday and are provided with a uniform that they wear each day. A typical school day at TCA has students eating breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria and participating in core classes for mathematics, reading, history, science/health, and English as well as electives or related education classes for art, music, and physical education. The curriculum and methods of teaching used are dependent upon a student’s grade level:
- Pre-Kindergarten: Pre-K is associated with the on-campus daycare that serves both the TCM children and the children of staff members who are too young to attend school. We use a curriculum specific to Pre-K to help prepare our youngest students for Kindergarten.
- Kindergarten through 8th Grade: Students in K-8 are taught in multi-grade classrooms by certified teachers using Abeka, a comprehensive, research-based curriculum that is built on Christian values. Abeka uses a biblical perspective and time-proven academic methods and materials to educate children of all different learning abilities.
- 9th through 12th Grade: High school students are in teacher-taught classes utilizing the Abeka curriculum. Juniors and seniors also have the option to take dual-credit courses through the local community college, Itawamba Community College. Our educational staff works closely with our high school students to ensure they are completing the required courses to be able to earn their high school diploma.
TCA provides year round educational opportunities for students. Though we take short breaks throughout the year, students still engage in camps, life skills training, and enrichment activities during the summer months.
Specialized Learning Opportunities
The staff at TCM and TCA understand that not every child learns at the same rate, and a number of the children coming to us have special needs or disabilities – some that require help beyond what we are able to provide on-campus. We collaborate with the local public school district and therapists in the community to establish individualized education plans (IEPs), interventions, and related services for students with disabilities or other special needs. For some children, this means they attend the public school
full-time in order to have their needs met, while others attend TCA but receive additional services such as speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, or physical therapy. Our goal for every child at TCM is to do whatever is in their best interest by providing them with the support and resources they need to be successful in education and in life.
